Youngster creates Picklefest event
On Aug. 9, Picklefest 2025, the brainchild of incoming Scripps Ranch High freshman Aaryan Wadhwa, transformed pickleball courts at the Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club Aviary location into a lively carnival of games – all in the name of giving back.
Wadhwa’s mission was to raise $1,000 to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – San Diego Chapter, and his own passion project, Project Playit4ward, which collects new and gently used pickleball equipment for schools and organizations that want to play but lack the means.
His inspiration came from years of volunteering with Balasangam, a Scripps Ranch-based youth cultural group that has raised thousands annually for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
“I wanted to take what I’ve learned through Balasangam and create something new that combined my love for pickleball with fundraising,” Wadhwa said.
Picklefest wasn’t a typical tournament. Wadhwa designed carnival-inspired pickleball games and other creative challenges, involving participation from all ages and skill levels. His friends Gabe Schatz and Shiven Sharma joined in on event day to help run the games.
Scripps Ranch Swim and Racquet Club, The French Oven Bakery, Epic Pickleball Life, Safe PT by Calvin, and Get2Eleven donated prizes and sponsorships.
By day’s end, the numbers told a winning story – $1,180 was raised. “This is just the start,” Wadhwa said…“I want Picklefest to become a tradition in Scripps Ranch.”
