Members of SIR enjoy camaraderie and fun

There’s a special kind of energy that comes from staying active and making new friends, and the local Sons in Retirement (SIR) branch is proving that retirement is anything but quiet. Whether it’s on the green, at the lanes or over a glass of local vintage wine, this group is all about fostering camaraderie among men in our community.

A month of adventure

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity for our members. From the competitive spirit of golf, bowling and pickleball to a fascinating deep dive into local history with a tour of the Julian Gold Mine, there has been something for everyone.

Most recently, members and their wives enjoyed a beautiful afternoon at Speckle Rock Vineyards in Escondido. The wine tasting event, organized by Darrel Evora, offered the perfect backdrop for laughter and great conversation amidst the rolling vines.

Good food and great stories

The heart of the group’s social calendar is the monthly luncheon, held every fourth Wednesday at a favorite local restaurant.

The May luncheon promises to be particularly memorable. We are honored to host Dr. Ralf Dunkel, Ph.D., who holds the distinction of being the youngest-ever crew chief in charge of the MIG-21. Dr. Dunkel will be sharing incredible firsthand accounts of his time serving in both the East and West German Air Forces. From the tensions of the Cold War to the historic fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, his stories offer a unique window into a moment in history.
