After retiring from a career in engineering management in the high-tech industry in 2025, Brian Richardson was looking for something entirely different, practical, hands-on and challenging. That search eventually led to the creation of Sharp Shop, a mobile sharpening service that now appears at local farmer’s markets and serves both residents and small businesses across the region, including the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market.

“I have always been a hands-on kind of person and was looking for something that would be challenging and fun,” Richardson said.

The idea for Sharp Shop came from woodworking, a hobby that required frequent sharpening of tools. Over time, he noticed a gap in everyday services.

“It occurred to me that this was not a service that is readily available for the average person,” he said. “Having sharpened knives for friends, it became apparent it was also something that was sorely needed.”

Today, Sharp Shop focuses mainly on kitchen knives.

“Most people have a collection of kitchen knives that have seen better days, and sharpening these knives is mainly what I do,” Richardson said. “This includes serrated as well as straight-edge knives.”

But the work extends far beyond kitchen cutlery.

“I can sharpen almost anything,” he said, including scissors, garden tools, paper cutters, and more. “I sharpen knives and smaller items at my market stall, usually within 15 to 20 minutes. I sharpen larger items … at home and return them at the next market.”

He also takes on repair work.

“I also go beyond knife sharpening – I repair knife handles and re-profile knife blades that have been chipped or damaged,” Richardson said. “I have sharpened jackhammer bits for a local company, and cutting blades from a machine that makes lanyards.”

Sharp Shop serves mostly residents at markets in Scripps Ranch, Chula Vista and Little Italy, though word of mouth has expanded its reach.

“My customers are usually residents who live near the markets I serve,” Richardson said. “However, as my name gets out there, I am more frequently contacted by companies that have something unusual that needs sharpening.”

Common items include everyday kitchen tools.

“Generally, chef’s knives, paring knives, and carving knives,” Richardson said. “However, I also see lots of filleting knives and hunting knives.”

His process is designed for convenience.

“I encourage customers to drop their knives off with me when they first come to the market,” he said. “While they are shopping for their groceries, I can sharpen their knives so that they are ready for pick up.”

Precision is central to his work.

“Kitchen knives are personal things, and I sometimes see knives that have been handed down from previous generations,” he said. “I work hard to make sure all my customers’ items are well cared for and sharpened appropriately.”

Looking ahead, Richardson hopes customers better understand the range of services available.

“Firstly, I want my customers to feel confident in how I will treat their items,” he said. “I also want them to learn more about the broader services I provide and feel comfortable using those services.”

Visit Sharp Shop at the Scripps Ranch Farmer’s Market, held each Thursday at 10045 Carroll Canyon Road from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.
