Garden Club features garden tours
By Denise Stewart
The Scripps-Mesa Garden Club’s summer schedule features evening tours of members’ gardens.
In May, longtime club member Char Fitzgerald conducted a walk among the abundant blooms in her hillside backyard in central Scripps Ranch. She has lived and gardened enthusiastically here for several years. Her varied collection of productive fruit trees, healthy cacti and succulents, and colorful roses that are thriving thanks to her knowledgeable care, made for an enjoyable evening tour.
Char’s sharing her success with controlling beetles that have infested some of her flowers also made the tour a learning experience. Rather than using chemicals, she goes out to the plants around nine each evening and picks the beetles off the leaves before they do any damage to the flora. The plants are blooming profusely, and their colors light up their corner of the yard without beetles or chemicals being a threat.
June’s garden tour will be hosted by a new member of the club on the fourth Tuesday evening at 6. His garden is on the north side of the Ranch. As always, refreshments will enhance the relaxed learning experience among the pleasing results of his diligence at his hobby of gardening.
In July, again on the fourth Tuesday evening, another member will share her relationship and enjoyment of gardening.
When evenings grow darker, the club will resume indoor meetings that feature presentations by gardening experts.
