Dr. Menon honored as volunteer during Stars in Education Celebration

San Diego Unified School District honored more than 200 outstanding educators, classified employees and volunteers during its inaugural Stars in Education Celebration on May 20, recognizing the individuals whose dedication, compassion and service help shape the lives of students across the district.

Among the 2026 San Diego Unified Volunteers of the Year was Dr. Suresh Menon, volunteer at Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School.

Dr. Suresh Menon is, at his core, a neighbor and community volunteer who believes in showing up and making a difference every day. Whether its supporting local schools paying for student enrichment in learning and sports, contributing to civic efforts such as funding for drones for fire fighters, or helping families in need such as the Widows and Orphans of San Diego Police Department, and feeding the homeless through Feeding San Diego’s Pantry initiative, he is driven by a simple goal: to leave his community better than he found it.

In San Diego, he has focused on creating opportunities by building quality jobs, helping new graduates find their footing, mentoring professionals through their careers, and supporting those who may be struggling at work. He has invested in UC San Diego and San Diego State University research programs, supported all the schools throughout the Scripps Ranch area, and opened doors for students and graduates through training and employment opportunities. For more than 10 years he has supported the San Diego Wild Animal Park in its conservation efforts of endangered species.

After earning his PhD in Engineering Science from Pennsylvania State University, he dedicated his career to advancing research in novel proteins and peptides, helping replace antibiotics in pet food and animal feed with natural, plant-based alternatives aimed at improving both animal welfare and long-term sustainability. His work has contributed to meaningful global efforts, including addressing human rights issues in parts of the fishing industry and supporting environmental preservation. He has designed and automated factories across three continents, developed markets in more than 35 countries, and holds more than 50 patents and trademarks. He is also proud to have contributed to research supporting NASA’s jet and rocket propulsion work.

At home, Suresh is a father of two daughters, ages 11 and 8. Much of his happiest time is spent supporting their interests, especially their love of ballet, whether that means driving them to classes, cheering them on, or simply being present in their journey.
