“Memories of Underdevelopment”
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will exhibit “Memories of Underdevelopment,” opening Sept. at its downtown location, 1100 and 1001 Kettner Blvd.
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, in collaboration with the Museo Jumex in Mexico City and the Museo de Arte de Lima, presents “Memories of Underdevelopment” as part of “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA.”
“Memories of Underdevelopment” is set within the context of Latin America from the 1960s through the 1980s, bringing together artistic practices that, although evidently related, have until now been treated separately. Showcasing conceptual and performance artworks, this exhibition will shed new light on such well-known artists as Lina Bo Bardi, Hélio Oiticica and Lygia Pape, as well as lesser-known artists in Colombia, Uruguay, Chile and Peru.
“Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA” is a far reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Supported by grants from the Getty Foundation, “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA” takes place from September 2017 through January 2018 at more than 70 cultural institutions across Southern California, from Los Angeles to Palm Springs, and from San Diego to Santa Barbara. “Pacific Standard Time” is an initiative of the Getty, and the presenting sponsor is Bank of America.
“Memories of Underdevelopment” is organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in partnership with the Museo de Arte de Lima and the Fundación Jumex Arte Contemporáneo. Lead support is provided through grants from the Getty Foundation. Additional support provided through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This project has received generous underwriting support from Maryanne and Irwin Pfister and the LLWW Foundation.
Enjoy free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17, thanks to Bank of America. MCASD members get the first look at the exhibition during a special preview hour from 10 to 11 a.m.
