E-bike regulations pass in committee
San Diego District 7 City Councilmember Raul Campillo’s e-bike regulations aimed at improving public safety for children and families across the City of San Diego unanimously passed the City Council’s Public Safety Committee on March 11. The e-bike regulations will be brought to the full City Council for final approval. If approved, a comprehensive public outreach campaign would be launched to promote education-first enforcement while strengthening parent and youth training and accountability.
The regulations seek to increase safety for children as well as reduce reckless riding by imposing an age limit of 12 years for class 1 and 2 e-bikes; allowing passengers only if the e-bike is specifically designed to accommodate multiple riders with a permanent second seat; offering education-first diversion (safety course).
Strike averted
The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and the San Diego Education Association (SDEA) reached a mutual agreement on how to proceed with a contract – and the one-day strike previously scheduled for Feb. 26 was cancelled. The two sides came to agreements on several bargained subjects including special education and wages.
Scripps Mesa Fireworks set
The Scripps Mesa Fireworks nonprofit organization announced that the date of the fireworks show will occur on Friday, July 3, at 9 p.m., lighting up the skies over Wangenheim Middle School. The Mira Mesa Town Council will host a community watch party at Hourglass Field starting at 4 p.m.
As the Independence Day Fireworks are funded entirely through sponsorships and donations, Scripps Mesa Fireworks invites the community to help make this special anniversary celebration possible. Every contribution goes directly toward the fireworks show, permits, and insurance. Scripps Mesa Fireworks is a 501(c)(3) Corporation dedicated to raising funds for and organizing the 4th of July fireworks show over Mira Mesa for the residents of Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa and Miramar.
Poll workers needed
The Registrar of Voters is hiring poll workers for the June 2 Gubernatorial Primary Election. Poll workers play an essential role in elections and can receive a daily stipend while serving their community.
There is a specific need for bilingual poll workers who can help support voters.
San Diego County elections operate under the Voter’s Choice Act, a state law that replaces traditional polling places with vote centers that are open for an extended period leading up to Election Day. Instead of serving just on Election Day, poll workers are now needed to staff vote centers for four or 11 days during the two weeks before Election Day.
Responsibilities include opening and closing the vote center; assisting voters and providing customer service; answering questions. The Registrar is looking for team players with strong leadership and customer service skills, as well as flexibility, patience and integrity. Poll workers must represent the Registrar of Voters in a professional and nonpartisan manner.
