Old Pros set the 1st events on the 4th

The Scripps Ranch Old Pros will launch the first of this community’s Fourth of July events bright and early on Independence Day this week. The club will hold its annual Fourth of July Run & Ride with a 7 a.m. start for the 10K Run and a simultaneous start for its annual 50-Mile Bike Ride only a few blocks away. More running and cycling events will follow shortly thereafter. As many as 3,000 participants are expected altogether.

10K Race
The 10K Race starts at 7 a.m. at Aviary Drive and Red Cedar Drive in front of Miramar Ranch Elementary School. The route heads north and winds its way around Miramar Lake.

This a USA Track & Field-sanctioned event and the San Diego area’s best runners are expected to participate. It features a downhill stretch that ends near Hoyt Park.

This run includes male and female divisions for all age groups and medals will be awarded to first, second and third place finishers in each division. The top first place male and female finisher will be awarded the Ron McElliott Cup.

2-Mile Fun Run
The 2-Mile Fun Run is an event intended for nearly anyone, walkers and runners alike. It was created to be a family run. Strollers are allowed on the course but pets are not allowed. The Fun Run is scheduled to begin at 7:07 a.m. at Aviary Drive and Red Cedar Drive in front of Miramar Ranch Elementary School. The route is much the same as the route for the 10K Run, but it only goes part way along the Miramar Lake path and makes a tight U-turn to head back. This event ends at Canyon Lake Drive near Hoyt Park.

Parking for running events
The main parking area for participants in the running events is the Vons shopping center parking lot at Scripps Ranch Boulevard and Aviary Drive. Shuttles will run between 6 and 6:50 a.m., but everyone is advised to arrive at the lot no later than 6:30 a.m. Additional parking will be available at Meanley Drive and Hoyt Park Drive. In addition, the Old Pros have permission to use the parking lots of the Core Logic building at 10277 Scripps Ranch Blvd. and the PayChex parking lot at 10150 Meanley Drive. Shuttles will be available at Meanley and Hoyt Park Drive.

Check in for all running events opens at 6 a.m. at Aviary Drive and Red Cedar Drive.

50-Mile Bike Ride
The 50-Mile Bike ride will start at the intersection of Hibert Street and Scripps Ranch Boulevard. While this is not a race, it is a grueling ride for cyclists in top shape. This is not an easy course. Helmets are required and all roads on the route will remain open to regular traffic. Participants are reminded to watch for pedestrians and obey all normal rules of the road.

The course snakes through part of Mira Mesa, west to Del Mar, through Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, down through Rancho Bernardo and ends near Hoyt Park. The course closes at 11:30 a.m.

Black Mountain Bicycles, 9860 Hibert St., Suite C1 in Scripps Plaza, is the sponsor for the event and will provide some bike repair help along the course at the aid stations. The aid stations will also provide fruit, snacks and water.

28-Mile Bike Ride
The 28-Mile Bike Ride starts at 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Scripps ranch Boulevard and Treena Street. This ride is for both dedicated riders and weekend warriors, but it includes some challenging hills. Helmets are required and the same safety rules apply as for the 50-Mile Ride. This course runs through parts of Rancho Penasquitos, Santaluz, Del Sur and loops back through Rancho Bernardo and Poway before ending near Hoyt Park. The course closes at 11:30 a.m.

12-Mile Bike Ride
The 12-Mile Bike Ride will launch at the intersection of Scripps ranch Boulevard and Hibert Street. This is meant to be a fun ride for families. The course loops around Miramar Lake twice and heads to Hoyt Park where it ends. The course closes at 10:30 a.m. Helmets are required and the same safety rules apply as they do for the other Run & Ride cycling events.

Cycling event parking
Parking for all cycling events will be available on Treena Street and in the parking garage of Cush Plaza, 10620 Treena St.

Check in for cyclists participating in the rides that morning opens at 6 a.m. at the intersection of Scripps Ranch Boulevard and Treena Street.

Race bibs
Registered participants in all Fourth of July Run & Ride events may pick up their race bibs at Hoyt Park the day before the Run & Ride, July 3, between 3 and 6 p.m.

Craft Beer Garden
All Fourth of July Run & Ride participants ages 21 and older will be admitted to the Craft Beer Garden in Hoyt Park following the morning events. The beer garden will close at 1 p.m.
