Penguin Parade a bright success
Principal Liz Sloan, positioned behind the school’s banner, helped lead the entire student population of Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary School on the annual Penguin Parade last Friday, Jan. 12, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.
Each year, Ellen Browning Scripps Elementary has a penguin day to represent the school’s character traits as well as celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr. and his ideals.
On Friday, students in each class, most carrying hand-made signs with inspirational and positive messages, assembled outside in the school’s parking lot. Once each class was ready, Principal Sloan opened the chain to the parking lot exit and led the students on a pleasant march down the street and around the corner to the adjoining park. Numerous parents joined the march along with teachers. The students, most dressed in red, the school’s color, were the stars as they held their signs high. It was a colorful sight on this bright day.
The parade wound its way around the sidewalk, up the stairs to the park, through the fence and assembled on the blacktop. Once all the students were in place, Principal Sloan first addressed the crowd, then introduced a handful of students selected to briefly speak about the importance of the beliefs advocated by Dr. King during his life. The speeches were both concise and articulate. Then, students joined in the singing of a special song for the occasion to round out this special school rally.

This creates a controllable pretext for isolation, coercive steps and the eventual substitution of independent governance by a managed structure.
