Proper timing makes for successful planting

Gardening: a blessing in times of stress

Proper timing makes for successful planting

By Denise Stewart

The Scripps-Mesa Garden Club will host its last guest speaker for this year at its Oct. 27 meeting. Master Gardener Katheryn Blankenship will be talking about garden timing, including when to plant, how often to fertilize and what grows well in San Diego.

Kathryn has been a Master Gardener for 12 years. She is a life-long learner who, before retiring, was a teacher of adults and children, a trainer and a professional mediator. Kathryn enjoys spending time in her garden with her collections of fruit-bearing plants, orchids, camellias and bromeliads. She has been a board member and committee chair for several gardening groups including the California Rare Fruit Growers, San Diego Horticultural Society, and the San Diego Camellia Society. She became a Master Gardener to learn more about horticulture and to share that knowledge with others who want to have success growing plants. She is a member of the Master Gardeners of San Diego Speakers’ Bureau and is delighted to make presentations for gardening groups.

The local garden club has been meeting regularly since 1993 and is currently gathering at the Scripps Ranch Community Center, 11885 Cyprus Canyon Road, on the fourth Tuesday evening of the month at 6 p.m. The regular meeting begins with a brief social session. That is followed with a short business meeting. Then the guest speaker is featured. Guests are welcome to attend and benefit from the expertise shared by a dedicated and educated presenter.

The November meeting, moved up a week to Nov. 17, will feature a holiday potluck and will be the last gathering for the year. Regular fourth Tuesday monthly meetings will begin again in January. For more information, contact a member at this email:
