Remains may be that of missing man
Efforts are underway to identify the remains of a person found on the eastern edge of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. It is feared that the body is that of Scripps Ranch resident Tai Heng Sun, who has been missing since June 15.
Human remains were spotted on the east side of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar) at about 2:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 10. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) was notified by the Naval Criminal Investigation Service (NCIS).
The SDPD is working in conjunction with the NCIS, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the San Diego County Medical Examiner to recover and identify the remains. The SDPD stated that clothes found at the site are consistent with those worn by Sun on the day he was reported missing, and forensic testing will be needed to identify the remains.
Sun was last seen by his family on June 15 in his home on Maple Grove Lane near Sycamore Trail Road. A surveillance video from a camera atop a utility pole showed Sun wearing a blue shirt, a dark blue hat, dark gray pants and carrying a white jacket, walking toward the eastern end of Stonebridge Parkway on the day he was reported missing.
Police described Sun as an Asian male, 85 years of age, 5-feet-6-inches tall, weighing 140 pounds, with gray hair and brown eyes. Sun suffers from Alzheimer’s and speaks little English.
A very large effort was put forth to find Sun, but to no avail. The SDPD, San Diego Sheriff’s Department Search and Rescue Unit and MCAS Miramar Personnel were involved in an extensive search to locate Sun earlier this summer. The Scripps Ranch Civic Association helped coordinate volunteer efforts.
