Local election numbers updated
(Nov. 6) Results of the Nov. 3 General Election have been updated by the San Diego County Registrar’s Office. While not final or certified, these are the most recent updates as of 5 p.m., Nov. 6.:
First of all, it appears Scripps Ranch will have a local resident in office for San Diego City Council District 5. Marni Von Wilpert, born and raised in Scripps Ranch and residing just a mile from her childhood home where her parents still live, is leading opponent Joe Leventhal for the San Diego City Council District 5 seat with 53.89 percent of the votes to 46.11 percent. Von Wilpert is a deputy city attorney for San Diego.
Incumbent City Attorney Mara Elliott, also a Scripps Ranch resident, is defeating challenger Cory Briggs 67.08 percent to 32.92 percent, and will remain the San Diego City Attorney.
Meanwhile, San Diego County District 3 Supervisor incumbent Kristin Gaspar, a North County resident who outwardly aligned herself with President Donald Trump, is losing to challenger Terra Lawson-Remer 58.57 percent to 41.43 percent. San Diego County District 3 includes Scripps Ranch.
Todd Gloria, a former San Diego City Council member and California State Assembly member, appears to be the new mayor of San Diego with 56.15 percent of the votes to 43.85 percent by his opponent. Gloria is defeating Barbara Bry, a San Diego City Councilmember for District 1 and longtime entrepreneur.
Teravainen named Veteran of the Year
Tony Teravainen, a U.S. Navy veteran, business owner, consultant and co-founder of Support The Enlisted Project (S.T.E.P.), was named the Veterans Museum at Balboa Park Veteran of the Year.
S.T.E.P.’s mission is to build financial self-sufficiency with our young military and veteran families through financial counseling, emergency grants and other support programs. S.T.E.P. is in Scripps Ranch at 9915 Businesspark Ave., Suite A.
Growing up in an Air Force family and then joining the Navy at 18, Teravainen knows firsthand the life of an enlisted service member. After nine years as a submariner and an abrupt medical discharge from the Navy, Teravainen went on to open businesses, manage a manufacturing plant at SONY Electronics and became a strategy consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton for five years.
It was there he learned of a non-profit that needed support with a strategy plan. After three years, that organization decided to shift operations to a national level, and the Southern California chapter disaffiliated and started Support The Enlisted Project. In 2012 Teravainen stepped in as board chair and took over as CEO in 2014.
Scripps Ranch COVID-19 cases
After weeks of being on the brink of slipping into the most restrictive Purple Tier, San Diego County’s COVID-19 case rate rose above 7.0 cases per 100,000 this week. This week 530 new cases were confirmed among San Diego County residents on Nov. 4. While a single week of a high score does not move a county into a more restrictive tier, the region will be moved if numbers do not improve. A move to the Purple Tier would close indoor operations at restaurants, gyms, churches, theaters and other locations.
Total cases of coronavirus reported in the Scripps Ranch 92131 ZIP Code area now stand at 245 since San Diego County began recording cases. That’s an increase of 11 cases in the past week. Local cases increased by 16 the previous week and 11 cases the week before.
The County of San Diego reported 686 total cases recorded in Mira Mesa and 404 total cases in Poway. San Diego County reports the cases, broken down by community residence listed for each patient.
These are the total tabulated cases in each ZIP Code area since the County began tracking cases in February. It does not reflect those who recovered, nor does it account for those who died from COVID-19 in Scripps Ranch. The County of San Diego does not provide those statistics at this point.
County warns residents not to skip medical visits
The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency is urging San Diegans not to delay routine medical and dental care amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Physicians and dentists across the county are reporting that fewer patients are scheduling annual medical and routine preventive dental visits. County health officials are concerned about this trend because delaying necessary care can cause more severe health issues in the future.
At the very beginning of the pandemic, health officials urged the public to seek care only for urgent and emergency procedures due to a desire to conserve personal protective equipment for medical providers in hospitals, and because of concerns about possible transmission of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
Since then, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and American Dental Association (ADA) have developed science-based recommendations for enhanced infection control procedures for medical and dental offices.
County residents who would like to seek dental care but do not have a dentist, can call 2-1-1 San Diego for a referral or visit the 2-1-1 San Diego Health & Wellness website.

Scripps Ranch News-24/7 Realty lighting contest
It seems that folks are ready for the holidays to begin more than ever this year. The Scripps Ranch News Home Lighting Contest, sponsored by 24/7 Realty, is a great way for residents to get into the holiday spirit.
The theme for this year’s contest is “Home for the Holidays.”
Anyone with a home in Scripps Ranch who will decorate the outside of their home with holiday lights is eligible to enter the contest. Prizes will be awarded to the top entrants.
Judges will drive by the properties in the contest to view the lighting displays. Once judging is complete, the top displays will be photographed. Photos of the winning displays will be published in the special December holiday issue of Scripps Ranch News. Deadline to enter is Dec. 2, 2020.
