SRHS loses to Christian 19-61

The Christian High School Patriots traveled to Scripps Ranch High School (SRHS) on Oct. 27 to hand the varsity football Falcons another loss, 19-61, in what has become a difficult season for the home team. The Patriots are now 7-2 while the Falcons drop to 1-8.

The Falcons had several decent plays and entered the red zone on a handful of occasions, but rarely capitalized. The first instance was in the first quarter when SHRS was close, but had to settle for a field goal. Still, Falcons kicker Matthew Killam put the team on the board first and there was hope for a victory.

The Patriots took little time to answer with a quick touchdown, then another, making the score 3-14.

In the second quarter, the Falcons scored when Daniel Cox threw a TD pass to Matthew Tolliver, making the score close at 10-14 following a successful extra point kick. Unfortunately for the Falcons, Christian connected on a long scoring pass play and took control of the game for good, scoring often and shutting down the Scripps Ranch offense at nearly every turn.

Interestingly, the Patriots chose a strategy of kicking squib kicks or line drives during their many kickoffs in the game, apparently showing respect for the ability of the SRHS kick return team to make big plays.

The Scripps Ranch crowd stayed positive throughout the game, enjoying an impressive halftime performance by the Scripps Ranch marching band and drill team. The football team was cheered as it entered the field for the second half. Fans continued to encourage the players, and the team played hard throughout, showing admirable effort.

The Scripps Ranch varsity will host the Mission Bay High School Buccaneers on Friday, Nov. 3, at 6:30 p.m. for Senior Night, the team’s last game of the season.
